Is Your Skin “Getting Used to” Your Products?

Have you ever caught yourself saying, "I think my moisturizer stopped working." Or maybe you've heard someone say, "My skin must have gotten used to it."

It's one of the most common skincare myths out there. While it sounds completely reasonable, it's usually not what's actually happening. The truth is, your skin isn't building a tolerance to your moisturizer the way your body can become tolerant to certain medications. More often than not, your skin has changed, not your skincare.

Your skin isn't the same in July as it is in January. It's constantly responding to the world around you. Think about everything your skin experiences throughout the year:

  • Cold, dry winter air

  • Hot, humid summer days

  • Wind

  • Sun exposure

  • More frequent hand washing

  • Air conditioning

  • Indoor heat

  • Changes in hormones

  • Stress

  • Aging

That's a lot to keep up with.

It's no surprise that the same product can feel different depending on the season, or even from one week to the next. Instead of assuming your skincare has "stopped working," ask yourself a few questions:

Has the weather changed?

Cooler air and lower humidity often leave skin needing a little extra support.

Am I spending more time outside?

Sun, wind, and even smoke can leave skin feeling drier than usual.

Have my habits changed?

More hand washing, swimming, gardening, or time in the pool can all affect how your skin feels.

Sometimes the answer isn't buying a brand-new product. Sometimes it's simply adjusting how you use the one you already love. A few simple tweaks can help your moisturizer do its job even better:

  • Apply it while your skin is still slightly damp after washing.

  • Use a little more during dry or windy weather.

  • Reapply to hands after frequent washing.

  • Give your skin a few weeks to adjust when the seasons change.

Often, that's all it takes.

One of the reasons I love tallow-based skincare is because it isn't trying to be the newest trend or promise overnight miracles. Tallow is naturally rich in fatty acids that are similar to those found in our skin's own protective barrier. Rather than trying to force your skin to behave differently, it helps nourish and support what your skin is already designed to do.

Simple ingredients. Consistent care. Sometimes that's enough.

Healthy skin isn't about finding one "magic" product that works exactly the same forever. It's about paying attention. Your skin's needs will change with the weather, the seasons, and the stage of life you're in. The best skincare routine is one that changes with it.

So the next time your favorite moisturizer doesn't feel quite the same, don't be too quick to blame the product. Your skin may simply be asking for something a little different today than it did yesterday. And that's perfectly normal.
